    The risks to personal health and family are far too great to ignore. The need for a high quality, and cost effective means of taking planned vacations with your family and friends is essential to your good health. So what are the alternatives?

    Care to borrow someone’s cottage? Maybe you are one of the lucky ones with “Connections”. You know family or friends that have a vacation home that you could borrow. They may even trust you enough to let you use it! Most are not so lucky but even if you are one of the lucky ones. Odds are they will want to use their vacation homes during the same periods that you will. They have kids or grandchildren that have the same holidays and time off as yours do. Looks like you can not depend on this option.

    Wholesale vacation or last minute deals are also great, but its very hard to find places that are appropriate for the entire family never mind the uncertainty of a last minute booking. You may spend $500 to $800 per person, or you may wind up staying home with no place to go.

    All inclusive resorts and cruises are great if you are traveling alone, otherwise they become very expensive especially if your children are in their teenage years and you need to pay full fare for the cruise. $1000 per person is not unusual and quite often it can be a lot more.

    Vacation Clubs are an option but they tend to have rather high membership fees, initiation fees, and quite often the deals they offer are the same deals you could get by shopping the wholesale and last minute vacation market. Occasionally they may have good deals but more often then not they turn into big scams that are just trying to relieve you of your hard earned cash by charging you $1500 signup fees and perhaps even a monthly membership fee. This option tends to be very risky!

    Cottages or Villas can be rented for one or two weeks at a time. You can find a lovely place that has all the amenities you need. It could be well located near places to shop, or site seeing attractions. Perhaps it’s on the lake. Maybe there is even a place close by that will rent you a boat. Problem here is that a decent place with enough rooms and bathrooms to house a reasonable size family will rent from $2000 per week and up.

    Timeshares are a great way to vacation if you have enough for the up front fees. It is possible to purchase a week at a good resort for any where from $4000 to around $30,000 and this will entitle you to the same week in the same resort at the same time every year without additional cost, except possibly for the monthly maintenance fees. It is even possible to participate in exchange programs and swap the week you own for another week at some other resort. This is an excellent option for those with cash on hand, and some extra disposable income. Unfortunately most of us have neither the cash nor the income.

    Destination Clubs are a fantastic way to go. The properties are amazing, they have more bedrooms then timeshares and often have a lot more amenities like concierge, airport pickups, supplies purchased in advance and having your kitchen stocked with all the foods that you like to eat as per your requirements. They also usually have at least 5 appliances, and a full entertainment system including a television and stereo system. They even have larger dwellings that can handle larger size families. The problem here is the large up front fees. Destination Clubs can cost $200,000 just to join and I have seen some with signup fees as high as $1,000,000. Guess this one is out!

    Fractional ownership might work! You could get together with one or more of your friends or family and purchase a vacation home together. Or you could use one of the agencies that specialize in these types of arrangements. Depending how many families participate in the purchase you may be able to get in for as little as $50,000 to $100,000 each. Great plan but then you have to decide who uses the place when, what the rules are, etc. This can be a great way to end a long time friendship!

    Purchase your own cottage could work too! Now you get to spend the $300,000 to $500,000 all by yourself. You even get to pay all the maintenance and operating expenses too. The good news is that you have an asset you can hopefully sell later to get some of your money back. Most of us do not have this much extra cash lying around so this option too is out!

     What’s left? A low cost vacation alternative had to be found and THIS IS IT!
